| α [°] | Angle between the imaginary line from the tip of the spine to the center of the propodeal stigma and the imaginary line from the tip of the spine to the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe; calculated as cosα = (SPST²+PLSP²-PLST²)/(2*SPST*PLSP). graphic » |
| β [°] | Angle between the imaginary line from from the anteroventral corner of the metapleuron to the center of the propodeal stigma and the imaginary line from the anteroventral corner of the metapleuron to the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe; calculated as cosβ = (MPST²+MPPL²-PLST²)/(2*MPST*MPPL). graphic » |
| CW [µm] | Maximum cephalic width across eyes. |
| dCV [µm] | Mean carinae distance on vertex; measured in dorsal view along the transversal level of anterior eye margins; a centrally positioned measuring distance of 200 - 300 µm is divided by the number of rugae crossing it; the specific length of the measuring distance is adapted to individual size: in order to increase accuracy it should be as long as possible, but strongly convex surfaces should be avoided - i.e it must not exceed the carinulae continuing the frontal carinae backwards. Carinae/carinulae just touching the measuring line and those exactly at its endpoints are counted as 0.5. |
| δ [°] | Angle between the imaginary line from the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe to the tip of the spine and the imaginary line from the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe to the anteroventral corner of the metapleuron; calculated as cos δ= (PLSP²+MPPL²-MPSP²) /(2*PLSP*MPPL). graphic » |
| EL [µm] | Maximum large diameter of the elliptic eye. All structurally defined ommatidiae, pigmented or not, are included. |
| ε [°] | Angle between the imaginary line from the center of the propodeal stigma to the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe and the imaginary line from the center of the propodeal stigma to the anteroventral corner of the ventral margin of the metapleuron; calculated as cos ε = (PLST²+MPST²-MPPL²) /(2*PLST*MPST). graphic » |
| EW [µm] | Maximum small diameter of the elliptic eye. All structurally defined ommatidiae, pigmented or not, are included. |
| FL [µm] | Maximum anterior distance of frontal carinae |
| ML [µm] | Mesosoma length measured in dorsal view from the caudalmost portion of propodeum to the anteriodorsal corner of the pronotal slope (i.e. where the coarse structure of the dorsal pronotum and the fine structure of anteriormost pronotum meet); equivalent measuring also possible in lateral view. |
| MPSP [µm] | Maximum distance between the anterioventral corner of the metapleuron and the tip of the spine. graphic » |
| MPST [µm] | Maximum distance from the center of the propodeal stigma to the anterioventral corner of the ventrolateral margin of the metapleuron. graphic » |
| MW [µm] | Maximum mesosoma width. |
| PEH [µm] | Maximum petiole height; the straight section of the ventral petiolar profile at node level is the reference line perpendicular to which the maximum height of the petiole node is measured at node level. Note that maximum PEH is not necessarily found at the level of the node top. |
| PENL [µm] | Maximum length of petiolar node from the dorsocaudal corner of petiole to the anterior petiolar slope; the measuring line is directed orthogonal to a reference line formed by the dorsalmost linear part of the anterior petiolar slope. Ügraphic |
| PEW [µm] | Maximum width of petiole. |
| MPPL [µm] | Distance between the summit of the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe and the anterioventral corner of the ventrolateral margin of the metapleuron. Ügraphic |
| PLSP [µm] | Distance between the summit of the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe to the tip of the spine. Ügraphic |
| PLST [µm] | Distance between the center of the propodeal stigma and the summit of the caudodorsal corner of the propodeal lobe. Ügraphic |
| PnHL [µm] | Length of the longest hair on the corner of the pronotum; arithmetic mean of both sides. |
| PoOc [µm] | Postocular distance; using the cross-scaled ocular micrometer the head is adjusted to the measuring position of CL; caudal measuring point: median occipital margin as average between peaks and valleys of microsculpture; frontal measuring point: median head at the level of the posterior eye margin; average of left and right postocular distance is calculated. |
| PosSPl [µm] | Orthogonal distance of the uppermost point of spine to a ventral reference line of the mesosoma. The ventral reference line is the line from the ventralmost point of the pronotum to the ventralmost point of the metapleuron. With the graduated scale of the ocularmicrometer directed perpendicular in the visual field, this reference line is brought to coincidence with the horizontal line of the cross-scale at magnifications of about 100x. Then, at a magnification of ≥ 250 x, the mesosoma is carefully tilted to a position in which the ventralmost point of the metapleuron and the tip of the spine are at the same focal level. Note that this character is not necessarily measured in lateral view, but frequently in a dorsolateral view. Ügraphic |
| PosSPu [µm] | Measured in the same adjustment as for PosSPl and orthogonal to the ventral reference line. The distance of the uppermost point of spine to the dorsalmost point of propodeum. Note that this point is in the given adjustment usually behind the median line of propodeum and can only be found after focusing movements. With the graduated scale of the ocularmicrometer kept perpendicular in the visual field, focusing cannot induce a parallax error. Ügraphic |
| PPH [µm] | Maximum height of postpetiole measured perpendicular to a line defined by the suture between dorsal and ventral sclerites. |
| PPW [µm] | Maximum width of postpetiole. |
| SLd [µm] | Maximum straight line scape length in dorsal view, excluding the articular condyle; taken as arithmetic mean of both scapes; the scape is tilted to a position perpendicular to the swivelling plane of the funiculus segment. |
| SPBA [µm] | Smallest distance between the outer margins of the spines at their base, measured in dorsofrontal view. If the lateral margins of spines diverge continuously from the tip to the base, a smallest distance at base is not defined. In this case, SPBA is measured at the level of the bottom of the interspinal meniscus. |
| SPST [µm] | Distance between the center of the propodeal stigma and the tip of the spine. Ügraphic |
| SPWI [µm] | Maximum distance between outer margins of spines; measured in same position as SPBA. |
| SWd [µm] | Maximum scape width in dorsal standard viewing position as for measuring SL; transmitted light is used to measure the true cuticular surface and not the pubescence surface. |
